How to connect a domain to your AI-built website

Buying a domain, pointing its DNS and getting the SSL certificate working, explained without jargon.

What is involved

The registrar is the company where you buy (rent) the domain, yearly.
DNS is the address book that says "yourbusiness.com lives at this server".
The host is the server with your files on it.

Connecting a domain means telling the registrar where its DNS lives. The simplest way is to change the domain's nameservers to your host's. The host then manages every record for you: the website, the SSL certificate and email.

Step 1: buy the domain

Any registrar works. Compare the price for the second year too, since cheap first-year offers often renew at double. If you don't have a favorite, Namecheap is a good choice. For .ro domains, see our Romanian guide.

Step 2: change the nameservers

In your registrar's control panel, open the domain and look for "Nameservers" (sometimes "DNS servers"). Choose the option for custom nameservers and replace what's there with the ones your host gives you. For Host4Future these are:

Save, and that's the only change you make at the registrar.

Step 3: wait, then SSL

Nameserver changes are usually visible within a few hours, sometimes up to 48 hours. When the domain opens your site, the host can issue a free Let's Encrypt SSL certificate. Until then, browsers show "Not secure". That is normal for the first few minutes and should go away once the certificate is issued.

Common mistakes

Adding records at the registrar after switching nameservers. Once the nameservers point to your host, records there are ignored.
Typing a nameserver with a typo or a trailing dot the panel doesn't accept. Copy and paste them.
Letting the domain expire. Turn on auto-renew. An expired domain can be bought by someone else.
